Suspended Belief and Simple Pleasures
The Jackal and Hide invites you to a fusion of art, music,
cuisine and society. An emerging artist with a background in music and teaching,
Viccy Wanliss presents her twenty piece collection of luxuriously surreal oil
paintings.
Strongly influenced by Renaissance Art, Pre-Raphaelites and Surrealism,
Viccy combines transcendence with the magic of existence, creating an atmosphere
of calm dislocation in a super-reality. To find a deeper human connection,
Viccy suspends natural laws, inviting the viewers into a sublime moment out of
time. Refining and enhancing subtle gestures in human form achieves the delicate
art of suggestion and discovery.
Viccy will be performing
her guitar compositions on the opening night with bassist, Yuri Kuprashow. These
compositions echo an appreciation for the old and current, creating a sound
that is intricate and groovy. Transposing contour lines and colour into melody and
harmony, she creates a true fusion of audio and visual art. Also performing on
the opening night will be the duo Mesmer, who draw inspiration from the folk
and classical music of the European Medieval, Renaissance and Baroque periods.
Their unusual mix of influences challenge our conventional distinctions of
genre, while their performance on a variety of instruments, both familiar and
out of the ordinary crosses national as well as cultural boundaries.

Tulbagh Spring ARTS Festival
VICCY WANLISS was born and raised
in Tulbagh. Her free spirit and creative tendencies were nurtured by
the picturesque valley and creative community. She obtained an
Associate Degree in Performance from Trinity College London, and
developed her technique and process in art through experimentation,
practice and appreciation of the masters. “I did a variety of work,
including portraiture, murals, signage and even had the opportunity to
exhibit in some galleries. I played guitar in hotels/ restaurants, old
age homes and taught classical guitar. I currently teach a games and
music class at a play school, for two to four year olds. In 2012 I
organised my first solo exhibition, Suspended Belief and Simple
Pleasures, where I exhibited my twenty piece collection and performed my
own modern/ classical guitar compositions at the opening night. I
am intent on stretching myself by setting higher and bigger goals; by
creating new combinations of art and music and finding new ways of
sharing art with people. This same curiosity and intuition applies to
the music teaching methods I have developed.
